I would like to help
"Good Night Houston"

Dear Friends and Supporters,

It is with profound sadness and deep regret that I inform you of the passing of one of RAIN Humane's founding members, Houston Deaver.

I had the privilege of working with Houston over the past several years. He was a great friend to animals and people, alike, supporting the various rescues of Nassau County for two decades.  He was a man of great intelligence, character, and education.  He devoted much time, talent, and treasure to educating the public - especially children - about animal care and responsibility.  He was a tremendous advocate for spay/neuter.  He embodied the principles we live by at RAIN: compassion, education, responsibility, and love for all animals.  RAIN was blessed with his business acumen as well as his kind heart for many years, and for that we are so very thankful.  His contributions touched the lives of many, especially my own.

Houston leaves behind his wonderful wife Susan, and a menagerie of loving cats.
The animals have lost a true champion, but his dedication lives on in RAIN's accomplishments.
I loved him as a father; cherished him as a best friend; and respected him as a mentor and fellow animal rescuer.

Houston, you will be truly missed and never forgotten.
Respectfully,
Lynda Mixson, and fellow board members, Bill Jump, Amanda Wenzel, Jamie Reed

About Us
Saving One Animal Will Not Change The World, But Surely, For That One Animal, The World Will Change Forever...

Rescuing Animals In Nassau(RAIN), Humane Society, SPCA is an independent, unaffiliated 501c3 non- profit organization.   We receive NO funding from any government agency and NO money from any national animal welfare organization.  All funding for RAIN is by private donation from individuals, businesses, trusts, foundations, grants; bequests; special events; and from our Thrift Shops, Paws-Ability RAIN Resale, Rescue Me Booth, and Purrrfect Fit Clothing Thrift Shop.

Because of generous donations, RAIN  is able to rescue, rehabilitate, and help re-home animals from the Nassau County community.  The RAIN shelter sits on 13 acres which is located in Callahan, but the organization services ALL of Nassau County, including city limits, as well as the surrounding counties of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
Over 1000 animals were cared for at the RAIN facility in 2011. Our organization treats most animal related sicknesses, such as parvo, upper respiratory, mange, ringworm, as well as aggression rehabilitation.  Most of our adoptable pets are transported on the RAIN Train, while our "special need" and senior residents are made comfortable, and enjoy a very fulfilled, and social lifestyle, with hopes of being placed into homes that look past their unusual circumstances.  We have also implemented many community outreach programs which include an educational program into our local community school system, both public and private.   We teach responsible pet ownership, and the importance of spay/neuter along with following the laws pertaining to animals.  This program reaches about 3400 children.  RAIN is also in the process of formulating a six week course for Nassau County's Head Start Program.  Our RAIN Train Transport Program has assisted Nassau  County Animal Services with saving hundreds of animals’ lives yearly, in conjunction with Operation RAIN Drop Low-cost Spay/Neuter Program, preventing hundreds of unwanted pets from euthanasia.

RAIN functions on all volunteers with the exception of (1) part-time shelter person responsible for assisting volunteers with the morning cleaning and feeding of all animals in residence.   All other jobs pertaining to the shelter, resale shop, and fundraising is performed by our dedicated volunteers and board members.

Rescuing Animals In Nassau, (RAIN), Humane Society, SPCA is working to offer and preserve animal protection. At RAIN we seek a humane and sustainable world for all animals — a world that will also benefit our community.  Committed to educate our community about the importance of the spay/neuter program, promoting a commitment against animal cruelty, exploitation and neglect, all with the goal of protecting the bond that unites animals and humans.
